A DRIVER lost his car and his possessions when a cigarette tossed out of the window blew back in and set fire to the interior of the vehicle.
The man was driving northbound in his silver Ford Focus on the M66 at Bury at 8pm yesterday when the fire broke out.
He pulled onto the hard shoulder when he noticed the flames.
Watch commander Peter Fletcher, of Bury Fire Station, said: "A discarded cigarette thrown out of the window had blown back in. He didn't realise it had blown in."He had lots of possessions in the back, like clothing, and the cigarette end set fire to them."
The blaze took hold quickly and despite using breathing apparatus and a hose reel the firefighters were unable to save the Focus, which was left burned out at the side of the motorway.
The man was uninjured.
