A HWANGE went berserk and stabbed another man who had refused to share a cigarette with him, a local court heard last week.
Edmon Nyahuma, 30, from Lubangwe Village 2 in the coal mining town, was convicted of assault when he appeared before a local magistrate.
He was fined $50 or 30 days in jail should he fail to pay the fine.
In addition, Nyahuma was sentenced to five weeks' imprisonment which were set aside on condition he compensates Thobani Nyoni for the medical expenses he incurred following the assault.
Asked why he committed the crime, Nyahuma said he got angry when Nyoni refused to share the cigarette with him.
"I got angry when he refused to share his cigarette with me. I wasn't happy about it," said Nyahuma in court.
For the State, Lindiwe Maseko said the two were drinking beer at Korokoza Bar in Lubangwe on the day of the incident.
"On June 11, at 7.30pm, the two met at Koprokoza Bar in Lubangwe where Nyahuma asked for a cigarette from the complainant who refused saying he had also been given by someone," said the prosecutor.
She said Nyahuma became violent and started assaulting Nyoni.
"He kicked him on the ribs and abdomen severally with booted feet before stabbing him on the right thigh with an unknown object," said Maseko.
Court heard that Nyahuma fled from the scene after stabbing Nyoni who bled profusely and was rushed to St Patrick's Hospital with a deep cut on the thigh.
