A 35-year-old business woman, Salomi John, has been arrested by the policemen in Abuja, for allegedly battering her friend, Nabila Umar, during an argument over a stick of cigarette. She was said to have inflicted injuries on the victim with a razor blade.
A witness, who did not want his name in print said: “The woman collapsed as a result of the injuries. It is only a heartless human being that can do such to another fellow.”
Our reporter learnt that the suspect and the victim have been friends for many years but were always at loggerheads over trivial issues.
The suspect told our reporter that on that fateful night, she had a misunderstanding with the victim over an issue bordering on missing wrap of some substance at her residence in Mabushi village, Abuja, before they set out to their shop at Wuse Zone 4, where they sold soft drinks.
“Also, when we got to the shop, she reported to me that one Rukayat refused to give her a stick of cigarette, and I told her to let go and learn how to control her anger,” she said. This piece of advice, she said, did not go down well with the victim who accused her of taking sides with Rukayat and challenged her to a fight.
“At this point, I knew she was under the influence of hard drugs and I tried to control my anger by running away from her but she kept chasing me with the aim to hurt me. Although, I was under the influence of Indian hemp, I defended myself by reaching out for a razor blade to attack her. I didn’t regret my action,” she said.
The victim, who fainted as a result of the degree of injury she sustained, was rescued and rushed to the Wuse District Hospital by the policemen on patrol in the area.
Our reporter learnt that the victim is now responding to treatment at the hospital.
The Divisional Police Officer, Wuse Zone 3 Police Station, Sunday Irek, a Chief Superintendent, could not be reached for comment.
In the meantime, the suspect has been arraigned before a Magistrate Court sitting in Wuse Zone 2 for causing grievous hurt contrary to Section 247 of the Penal Code.
She pleaded guilty to the one count charge and Chief Magistrate Ahmed Usman Shaibu ordered her remand at the Keffi prison, adding that he will rule on her prison term on July 27 after the court has critically examined the health condition of the victim.
