Every anniversary is a special occasion, whether it’s the 50th or first, and a reason to celebrate.
That’s exactly what happened Saturday at Brothers Fine Tobacco Cigar Lounge’s first anniversary party, a casual, cool event of free pizza, beers and a raffle and selling a special anniversary cigar for only a dime.
“We’ve been in business sustaining ourselves for a year, and that’s a big deal,” said owner John Ceballos.
His customers couldn’t agree more. They love the cigar lounge, stopping by weekly — and sometimes more often — to enjoy an ambience not found anywhere else in the area.
One frequent customer is Eric Kinlaw, who comes by two to three times a week and reclined in a cozy leather chair while enjoying an anniversary cigar.
“I was looking for something new to do, and cigars are a nice way to relax and socialize,” Kinlaw said.
With his laid-back manner and long, wavy hair, Ceballos mingled among his customer friends, greeted everyone who entered and rang up sales as songs from a Smokey Robinson record played on a turntable.
Ceballos said he combined his background in the retail cigar business with a year’s worth of solid planning before he opened the lounge.
He wanted to bring his passion for quality tobacco items to the area, creating a place for cigar and pipe smokers to enjoy a leisurely smoke.
“I want to offer the best products and service, so customers will come here to buy their cigars and hang out,” he said.
The business has experienced slow but steady growth and people are welcome to even bring their own cigars to smoke. The other brother in the business, Matthew Ceballos, was also excited at reaching the one-year milestone.
“I didn’t expect to make it this far,” he said.
More than 100 styles of cigars are available with prices ranging from $2 to $10, and the lounge features well-known brands such as Gurkha, Punch, Kristoff and Perdomo and Ashton. All cigars are stored in a temperature and humidity controlled room to preserve their freshness. A recent addition is vapor kits in 16 flavors.
Throughout the day, good conversation filled the air along with the smoke as the customers, almost all men, chatted, sipped a beer and a few played on a video game.
Puffing on a pipe his mother bought for him, Christopher Quintanilla lives in Harker Heights but stops by weekly.
“I need this man time away from the family,” Quintanilla said.
Brothers Fine Tobacco is open Tuesday to Saturday from noon to 8 p.m. and is at 2208 E. Business U.S. Highway 190, Suite 2. For more information, call 254-300-6468.
