Cigar Mile Next for Tonalist

Robert "Shel" Evans' Tonalist, fifth in the Breeders' Cup Classic (gr. I) Oct. 31 at Keeneland, will likely make his next start in the Cigar Mile Handicap (gr. I) Nov. 28 at Aqueduct.

The 4-year-old son of Tapit  , winner of last year's Belmont Stakes (gr. I) and a two-time winner of the Jockey Club Gold Cup Stakes (gr. I) will also continue to race in 2016, according to Evans. A deal announced last year that Lane's End Farm acquired an interest in Tonalist is off the table.

Lane's End Acquires Interest in Tonalist

"There is no deal with Lane's End," Evans said Nov. 4. "We agreed to cancel that. Otherwise, that would have happened."

As for a stallion deal, Evans said, "There is some interest in him but I have not come to an agreement with any farm. There is some interest in him, but I'm not particularly happy about how some of the interest has come down and I think we are going to race him next year."

Out of the Pleasant Colony mare Settling Mist, Tonalist was bred by Woodslane Farm. He has won six of 15 starts and has earned $3,197,000. In addition to the Belmont and Jockey Club Gold Cup, he won the Peter Pan Stakes (gr. II) last year.

This year Tonalist has won the grade III Westchester Stakes at a mile and was second to Honor Code in the one-mile Metropolitan Handicap (gr. I). He won his second Jockey Club Gold Cup Oct. 3 prior to the Breeders' Cup.

Tonalist has returned to trainer Christophe Clement's barn in New York.

"I'm just playing with him this week," Clement said. "He jogged yesterday and jogged this morning. Everything is OK and we have the Cigar Mile in the back of our minds. We'll see where we are in a week to 10 days and take it from there."

"He's proved he could run a mile," Evans said. "He won the Westchester and finished second in the Met Mile. I think he's the second best miler in the country.
